Redevelopment of the Lort Smith Animal Hospital

Building Engineering is proud to highlight the successful redevelopment of the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in North Melbourne, completed earlier this year. A nominee in this year’s Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards, the project represents a significant upgrade to Melbourne’s largest and busiest not-for-profit animal hospital.

Lort Smith has long been an iconic institution that provides exceptional veterinary care for all pet owners. With the recent upgrades, the hospital now boasts state-of-the-art medical equipment and extended facilities, further enhancing its ability to care for the thousands of pets that pass through its doors each year.

What truly sets this project apart is the careful management required to complete construction while ensuring the hospital remained fully operational. Building Engineering’s commitment to minimising disruption in live environments allowed Lort Smith to continue its essential services throughout the redevelopment process.

The revamped vet clinic is now a light-filled, fear-free environment designed to reduce stress for both pets and their owners, ensuring a more comfortable experience for all.

Reflecting on the successful partnership between Lort Smith and Building Engineering, Melissa Lee, Business Transformation Manager at Lort Smith, noted: “What we have found is that both Lort Smith and Building Engineering really share a deep commitment to serving the community. This project has been so successful because of the relationship between Building Engineering and Lort Smith.”

After a four-year collaboration with Lort Smith, Building Engineering is proud to have contributed to a project that supports the well-being of Melbourne’s pets while upholding the hospital’s legacy as a pillar of the community. This redevelopment ensures Lort Smith remains at the forefront of veterinary care, continuing its mission to provide top-tier services to pets and their owners.

A big thank you to our key project partners, ClarkeHopkinsClarke and Donald Cant Watts Corke, for working together to bring this project to life.
