Built 77 years ago, North Melbourne’s Lady Huntingfield Children’s Centre underwent redevelopment works to reopen as an integrated child and family centre.
The redevelopment introduced an integrated care model combining maternal and child health, family support, counseling, and early education care (106 child care and sessional kindergarten places) under one roof.
The 2000m2 site contains a large number of mature trees, the majority of which were retained and protected during construction.
Consistent with the City of Melbourne’s zero net emissions by 2020 target, the facility uses a number of ESD strategies to minimise environmental impact during construction and over the life of the building.
A fully integrated approach to the ESD strategies was adopted, as part of a total package to reduce energy demand and recurrent energy costs to the building and minimise greenhouse gas emissions.
